SA’s first gong

WHAT HAPPENED THE OLYMPIC GAMES were in the headlines in SA for several less pleasant reasons. The disclosure of the squandering by the Department of Sport of R11m meant for an exhibition in Beijing to market SA triggered one of them. In terms of achievements, Khotso Mokoena can at least proudly display a silver medal for his long jump performance, but no other South Africans had yet stepped on to the winners’ podium. THE HERALD said this was just another extremely costly missed opportunity to market SA, and heads must definitely roll in the department. Unfortunately, that’s symptomatic of the inefficiency in the public sector. Rapport warned that the team’s disappointing performance demands a drastic rethink. Mail & Guardian said that for a sports-crazy country, SA’s sports development is woefully inadequate.
