Shilowa leaves a gap

WHAT HAPPENED INTERNAL unrest in the ANC intensified when Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa resigned, owing to his loyalty to Thabo Mbeki and wishing to avoid an ongoing battle with ANC leadership. Jack Bloom, DA leader in Gauteng, said Shilowa’s departure was a pity “because he stood head and shoulders above anyone else in his cabinet”. THE WITNESS said many would agree with Bloom, because Shilowa was a good leader who did a lot for his province during his tenure. The paper wondered how many other politicians had Shilowa’s mixture of authority and competence, imagination, empathy and, above all, a good sense of humour. The Star said the ANC couldn’t afford to lose competent people of that calibre.
