Still directionless

Finweek English Edition - - Letters -

AFTER a month of upheavals, differences of opinion and unilateral decisions by Robert Mugabe (who is clearly trying to reserve the most important cabinet posts for his party) the Zimbabwe ship hasn’t yet left harbour. Former President Thabo Mbeki, now in his personal role as SADC mediator for peace and prosperity in Zimbabwe, was again called in to try to defuse the crisis. THE MERCURY blamed the lack of progress after a month squarely on Mugabe’s obstinacy. The Star said Mbeki had often been hoodwinked by Mugabe’s many subterfuges in the past but must not let that happen this time. Beeld said perhaps it’s time for the new ANC leadership and SA President Kgalema Motlanthe to become involved and support Mbeki’s efforts.
