Springbok under fire

Finweek English Edition - - Letters -

THE SPRINGBOK emblem has been the country’s talking point for more than a week, following Parliamentary Sports Committee chairman Butana Komphela’s latest efforts to scrap it. The ANC said the emblem would be retained for the time being, but the flames were fanned by Western Province rugby player Luke Watson’s comments about apartheid rugby and the Springbok jersey. THE CAPE ARGUS said the century-old Springbok emblem belongs to all South Africans and for every individual it represents what he wants it to represent. Business Day said Watson should strive for a Springbok emblem acceptable to all, not only rugby racists. Volksblad said the Springbok represents excellence on the rugby field and it would be better to focus on nation building.
