SOUTH AFRICA’S media shifted its attention from the US election to SA’s own election next year. The early call on citizens to register at one of around 19 700 voting stations gave way to speculations about the “Shikota” movement’s chances of challenging the ANC at the voting booth. About 20m South Africans are registered voters. THE WITNESS said one of the biggest challenges for any democracy is to overcome voter apathy – especially among young voters, who no longer regard politics as a priority. The Star and Volksblad said people must use their vote to guide the country along the path of democracy. The Weekender warned the Shikota party should strive for quality not quantity.
