Water not for splashing in
WHAT HAPPENED WHAT OTHERS SAID
SEVERAL NEWSPAPERS responded to the new warnings that SA – one of the 35 driest countries – must prepare itself for serious water shortages in the next five to 10 years. Two of the latest warnings – from CSIR scientist Anthony Turton and former Water Affairs director general Mike Muller – mentioned water shortages in Gauteng by 2013. THE SATURDAY STAR said the warning about Gauteng shouldn’t be underestimated and that Government must reverse the loss of skills and wasting infrastructure as a matter of urgency, or Johannesburg could become an “urban wasteland”. Beeld said politicians should stop talking about climate change and pollution but should do something about them.
