ONE OF SA’S best-known singers lo­cally and over­seas – Miriam Makeba – died af­ter suf­fer­ing a heart at­tack af­ter giv­ing a per­for­mance in Italy. The 76-year-old Makeba, also known as Mama Africa, is re­mem­bered for her pop­u­lar songs The Click Song and Pata Pata. She lived over­seas as an ex­ile for 31 years and was the first fe­male from Africa to win a Grammy in the US. THE STAR said Makeba would be re­mem­bered as an am­bas­sador for African mu­sic and for her strug­gle to free the con­ti­nent from colo­nial­ism. The Ci­ti­zen said she was bet­ter known and loved out­side SA and be­longed to the whole world. The Cape Ar­gus said her strug­gle for jus­tice and free­dom in SA would al­ways be re­mem­bered.
