Farewell, Mama Africa
WHAT HAPPENED WHAT OTHERS SAID
ONE OF SA’S best-known singers locally and overseas – Miriam Makeba – died after suffering a heart attack after giving a performance in Italy. The 76-year-old Makeba, also known as Mama Africa, is remembered for her popular songs The Click Song and Pata Pata. She lived overseas as an exile for 31 years and was the first female from Africa to win a Grammy in the US. THE STAR said Makeba would be remembered as an ambassador for African music and for her struggle to free the continent from colonialism. The Citizen said she was better known and loved outside SA and belonged to the whole world. The Cape Argus said her struggle for justice and freedom in SA would always be remembered.
