WHAT HAPPENED

THE RULING ANC was reported to have settled for 25 March 2009 as the date for SA’s next election. Analysts polled said an early election strategy was an attempt by the party to catch its opponents – notably, the recently launched Congress of the People (Cope) – off guard. BUSINESS DAY cautioned against the date, arguing the move could work against the ANC, as it was itself unprepared. It quoted analyst Steven Friedman as saying the ANC could be in a state of panic following the formation of the Cope party. The Citizen reported the DA, UDM and the ID were all ready to participate in the election on the proposed date.
