WHAT HAPPENED

JOHAN NEL, who shot dead four black people – including a four-year-old – pleaded guilty to murder charges in the Mmabatho High Court. Prosecutor Sello Maema wants the court to mete out a life sentence to the 19-year-old. Nel was infamously dubbed the Skierlik shooter. THE CITIZEN, quoting criminologist Irma Labuschagne, said a jail sentence would be most appropriate for Nel as he had proved to Labuschagne that he could be rehabilitated. The Times, quoting Maema, dismissed the assertion his family could have affected Nel’s mental state, saying children from far more dysfunctional homes wouldn’t have commited such a crime.
