WHAT HAPPENED

A TEARFUL CARL NIEHAUS appeared to come clean in an open confession to the Mail & Guardian newspaper about his extravagant lifestyle and the lies he told to sustain it. An alleged attempt to defraud the Gauteng Economic Development Association and failure to pay for a R90 000 holiday package were among a litany of charges against the former struggle stalwart. DESPITE ADMITTING to wrongdoing, The Star said Niehaus’s confessions masked more lies concerning his behaviour over the years, such as recent revelations that he lied about his sister dying so he could get a free air ticket from his then employer. The Sowetan blamed instant gratification and the “bling” culture for Niehaus’s woes.
