ROBERT MUGABE’S order that resulted in the arrest and incarceration by Zanu (PF) security forces of returning exile and Zimbabwe’s agriculture deputy minister-designate Roy Bennet has threatened to affect the smooth functioning of the recently formed Government of National Unity (GNU). Bennet has been slapped with a charge of treason. THE CITIZEN said Bennet’s arrest underlined the fact that Mugabe had no intention of a genuine power-sharing arrangement and partnership with the opposition MDC parties. The Zimbabwean said the timing of Bennet’s arrest – an hour before the country’s new cabinet was sworn in – demonstrated Mugabe’s contempt for the GNU.
