Captain Manuel to bang the drum

Finweek English Edition - - Letters - R FEIGENSPAN

AS THE ADDITIONAL Government department headed by Trevor Manuel is concerned it was high time an agency of this type was established – and none better to head it than Manuel. The complete Government service needs whipping into shape. Now that Mbeki is out of the way and many positions protected as cronies can be held to account. Manuel, who knows what’s to be done, can dispatch his lieutenants and sweep out the rot.

I picture the whole lot like an old Roman galley. Manuel sitting at the big drum at the front of the ship and giving the tempo. Those lazy, overpaid public servants are lined up along both sides of the vessel and those lieutenants (executioners) walk up and down with a bullwhip and keep the troops in line. Wouldn’t that be a nice picture – for a change?
