WHAT HAP­PENED PRES­I­DENT JA­COB ZUMA de­liv­ered his first State of the Na­tion Ad­dress in Par­lia­ment, where he re­it­er­ated Gov­ern­ment’s am­bi­tion to cre­ate jobs through the Ex­panded Pub­lic Works Pro­gramme and men­tioned Gov­ern­ment’s com­mit­ment to im­prov­ing ed­u­ca­tion. Re­ac­tion var­ied, with the ma­jor­ity gen­er­ally wel­com­ing his speech.

said Obama must be ap­plauded for the bailout, as many ve­hi­cle in­dus­try work­ers in the US were los­ing jobs due to as­sem­bly plants and deal­er­ships clos­ing. It fur­ther said SA could learn from Obama’s courage in act­ing swiftly in times of cri­sis. said other al­ter­na­tive routes to the pro­tected re­struc­tur­ing bail-out wouldn’t have worked.
