Zuma for second term
SIGNS OF bitter and divisive ANC succession battles cropped up yet again when Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi told the nation the labour union body wanted Jacob Zuma to serve two terms as President. Vavi was harshly rebuked by ANC secretarygeneral Gwede Mantashe and ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema for undermining the ANC’s internal succession processes. THE TIMES said South Africa has just been through a traumatic succession battle between former President Thabo Mbeki and his successor, Zuma. It said SA couldn’t afford yet another period of political instability and called for a focus on service delivery. The Herald said Vavi’s comments reflected a timely reminder that Zuma was brought to power by Cosatu.
