Radebe blocks judge interviews
JUSTICE MINISTER Jeff Radebe sparked a controversy about SA’s judicial independence when he forced a postponement of scheduled interviews by the Judicial Services Commission for candidates vying for positions in the Supreme Court of Appeal. The minister requested more time to consider issues relating to the transformation of the judiciary. BUSINESS DAY said Radebe’s forced postponement – plus the fact that it took the whole day for the JSC to take the decision – was cause for concern. The Citizen noted the new leadership of the ruling party’s strong desire to transform the judiciary but said transformation for the ANC meant deployment of its cadres to influential positions to do the party’s bidding.
