Riots in Iran
VOTERS IN IRAN staged countrywide street demonstrations disputing the election results that incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won the election. Supporters of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi alleged vote-rigging by Ahmadinejad’s ruling regime. The unrest in oil-producer Iran has also unsettled markets with fears that oil prices will escalate. THE HERALD said the upheavals presented a fresh challenge for US President Barack Obama as he seeks an inclusive peace deal for the Middle East that would embrace nations previously excluded by his predecessor, George W Bush. The Star said the political unrest in Iran is worrying for SA, which relies heavily on Iranian oil.
