Design shop grows global wings

LOCAL IS DEFINITELY lekker for Berge Farrell, a leading independent design shop attracting a host of significant international projects despite the lack of an international network. This year alone it’s worked with brands from the likes of Pepsico, Unilever, Kraft, Henkel, SABMiller and Almarai (the biggest dairy producer in the United Arab Emirates). It’s also attracted jobs from as far afield as Honduras and Romania, where it upgraded the packaging design of leading beer brands to huge acclaim.

All the projects are managed from the Berge Farrell offices in Johannesburg or Cape Town. “We still think and operate like a boutique design agency,” says Berge Farrell MD Andrew Nel. “That makes us who we are and shapes our work. Rolling out a global network might be good for business but we weren’t convinced it would be good for the work.”

Nel says clients overseas are impressed by the freshness of thinking coming out of SA, where design is bursting with enthusiasm. European and US design is tired by comparison.
