SEV­ERAL FAC­TORS in­flu­ence the de­mand for goods and ser­vices, in­clud­ing con­sumers’ tastes and their needs, val­ues and in­come. The lat­est re­search by Unisa’s Bureau for Mar­ket Re­search (BMR) shows a fall in real in­come has var­i­ous ef­fects on con­sumer de­mand for cer­tain prod­ucts. The de­mand for es­sen­tial foods, such as veg­eta­bles and milk, de­creases pro­por­tion­ately less than for items like good wine or bot­tled wa­ter. There are also large dif­fer­ences within food groups.
