A VIDEO call I made over Skype from 33 000 feet above Atlanta in the USA this week failed to impress my four-year-old. He’s used to speaking to me on the internet when I travel and has come to expect it to be possible from anywhere.

Because we use video to chat to each other I can show him things I’ve bought him on my travels, or what the view looks like from my hotel window.

He uses the high-tech conversation to pull faces at me or show me what he made at school that day. And the cost of the call is free, aside from the internet connection itself.
