On his watch, BP wasn’t only responsible for the worst oil spill in history but, due to the leak, it will post losses that will also go down as the biggest in British corporate history.
Apart from some embarrassing headlines and a grilling from US politicians on Capitol Hill, Hayward is assured of walking away from it all at best unscathed and, at worst, with a tidy nest egg and a new cushy job. He will not only receive a £1m payoff, plus a pension expected to be worth around £500 000/ year but he’s also been “deployed” to TNK-BP, BP’s joint venture in Russia.
