SOME PEO­PLE have all the luck. Hay­ward has cat­a­pulted his com­pany into the record books – for all the wrong rea­sons. On his watch, BP wasn’t only re­spon­si­ble for the worst oil spill in his­tory but, due to the leak, it will post losses that will also go down as the biggest in Bri­tish cor­po­rate his­tory.

Apart from some em­bar­rass­ing head­lines and a grilling from US politi­cians on Capi­tol Hill, Hay­ward is as­sured of walk­ing away from it all at best un­scathed and, at worst, with a tidy nest egg and a new cushy job. He will not only re­ceive a £1m pay­off, plus a pen­sion ex­pected to be worth around £500 000/ year but he’s also been “de­ployed” to TNK-BP, BP’s joint ven­ture in Rus­sia.
