THE AB­SURD FEARS among whites at the dawn­ing of the new South Africa are lam­pooned in a Chicken Licken com­mer­cial de­vised by Net#work BBDO Jo­han­nes­burg. Fear­ing the worst, a fam­ily takes refuge in their base­ment be­fore the 1994 elec­tion and seals them­selves off from the out­side world.

Now, 16 years later, they run out of food. The fa­ther goes out in search of re­plen­ish­ments, emerg­ing through a trap­door into a Chicken Licken out­let that’s re­placed their house.

Three days later, when he hasn’t re­turned, his son fol­lows and finds him tuck­ing into the Chicken Licken menu, which is so good he for­got about the fam­ily.
