THE ABSURD FEARS among whites at the dawning of the new South Africa are lampooned in a Chicken Licken commercial devised by Net#work BBDO Johannesburg. Fearing the worst, a family takes refuge in their basement before the 1994 election and seals themselves off from the outside world.
Now, 16 years later, they run out of food. The father goes out in search of replenishments, emerging through a trapdoor into a Chicken Licken outlet that’s replaced their house.
Three days later, when he hasn’t returned, his son follows and finds him tucking into the Chicken Licken menu, which is so good he forgot about the family.
