The first three quarters of 2010 were characterised by extensive industrial action in, especially, the mining, manufacturing and government sectors. In the nine months to September 2010, roughly 13,4m working man-days were lost due to industrial action compared with 2,8m in 2009 as a whole. Wage demands were the main reason for industrial action, accounting for 98% of days lost.
