Thugs in uniforms

Finweek English Edition - - THEFINWEEK -

South Africa’s police chief Bheki Cele has presented a Parliamentary defence of the action of the police’s reaction unit, even though “they sometimes get out of hand”.

WHAT OTHERS SAID

BEELD said Cele’s comments were extremely irresponsible for the head of the police. Banana republics can afford police violence as in Hillbrow and Melville – not a country that boasts of being a democracy with human rights. “Cele is, in fact, setting a group of thugs in uniforms free on a defenceless society.” THE CITIZEN said the police’s stumbling around with Cele as its leader and the presentation in Parliament were just other blunders by the country’s police leadership.
