In­dif­fer­ent Is­rael

IN HIS POLEMIC on the Univer­sity of Jo­han­nes­burg (7 April) Stephen Mul­hol­land comes up with a panoply of the achieve­ments of Is­raelis and the state of Is­rael. A ver­i­ta­ble em­bar­rass­ment of riches, which might ex­plain why he didn’t men­tion what’s per­haps Is­rael’s most im­pres­sive achieve­ment since be­com­ing a state in 1948. I am, of course, re­fer­ring to Is­rael’s on­go­ing coloni­sa­tion of Pales­tinian land.

It’s de­press­ing that mem­bers of what’s prob­a­bly the most per­se­cuted peo­ple in his­tory should be so in­dif­fer­ent to the rights of oth­ers. Is­rael takes pride in be­ing
