Net reserves fell slightly to US$44,73bn in March from $44,78bn in February. This doesn’t mean the Reserve Bank didn’t intervene in the currency market to weaken the rand: that’s clear from the gross reserves, which rose to $49,3bn, boosted by a $1,8bn increase in foreign currency. Included in the gross reserves were the proceeds from intervention and a Government bond issue.
