Top Windows Phone Apps
While Windows Phone 8 still lags behind Android and iPhone in terms of platform maturity, there are a lot of great apps available for the service. Below are our favourites.
Xbox SmartGlass This app from Microsoft connects your Windows Phone to your Xbox console and becomes a remote for the Xbox. You can also use it to browse and load content on your Xbox, enter text on the console using the phone’s keyboard and in the future Microsoft foresees games that use the extra screen in interesting ways. It’s a must have for Xbox owners – especially those that use the console to listen to music and play videos. Skype Following Microsoft’s acquisition of Skype, the Internet telephony and messaging service is now integrated into Windows Phone once it is installed from the app store. The client itself works very well on Windows Phone 8, although we were surprised that it doesn’t integrate with the address book as Skype does on Android.. Supersport Keep an eye on sport from a South African perspective with the Supersport app that provides the latest results, news and upcoming fixtures. News stories just present an embedded browser window, but it’s great for checking results, if you care about sportsball. Whatsapp A staple on BlackBerry, iPhone and Android devices, WhatsApp is also available for Windows Phone 8 with an excellent client. There isn’t much of a discussion to be had – this is probably the first app to install on any new smartphone – simply because everyone has it and it beats the hell out of SMS. Carcossonne A classic board game that became a hit on the Xbox, Carcossonne is now also available on Windows Phone. Great for multiplayer and integrates with the Xbox version too.
