Dream merg­ers and ac­qui­si­tions

Busi­ness has been in­cred­i­bly slow in the merg­ers and ac­qui­si­tions (M& A) space in 2012, and 2013 is not look­ing much bet­ter at the moment. How­ever, a group of un­der­grad­u­ate char­tered ac­coun­tant stu­dents from the Univer­sity of Cape Town (UCT) have de­cided to come to the res­cue with some ideas for killer merg­ers in 2013.

Ac­cord­ing to lec­turer Paul Maughan the stu­dents were placed in groups and al­lo­cated a listed JSE com­pany. They were then en­cour­aged to en­gage in ne­go­ti­a­tions with each other over a month and ar­rive at an M& A deal that made sense. That meant mak­ing sure that the price was right and that the reg­u­la­tory au­thor­i­ties, in­clud­ing the Com­pe­ti­tion Com­mis­sion, would ap­prove. pp
