While many may consider the issue of female participation in the workforce – and the economy at large – somewhat f luffy or just downright frivolous, it is anything but. As Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the UN, rightly stated: “Equality for women and girls is not only a basic human right, it is a social and economic imperative.”

The World Bank has found that countries that invest in promoting the social and economic status of women tend to have lower poverty rates, eg an extra year of secondary schooling for girls can increase their future earnings by 10% to 20%.
