MTN* re­sults showed in­creased prof­its and sub­scriber growth, which will prob­a­bly hit 200m dur­ing 2013. But what hap­pened to av­er­age rev­enue per user (ARPU)? Not only was it again down but it’s dis­ap­pear­ing. ARPU was a phrase coined and cham­pi­oned by the mo­bile stocks back when they wanted a nice sim­ple way to show how great their busi­ness was. Ev­ery re­sults pre­sen­ta­tion would show a graph of im­prov­ing ARPU val­ues as users called more, SMSed more and started us­ing data. But in re­cent years the ARPU num­ber has been fall­ing as we What­sApped or BBMed in­stead of send­ing SMSs, used so­cial me­dia in­stead
