THE GAUTRAIN IS NEEDED
When the Gautrain was first mooted in February 2000 it was expected to cost roughly R4bn. This increased to R7bn by 2003 and jumped to R20bn in 2005. The total cost is now hovering at around R32bn. Many believe this is still a bargain given the rapid urbanisation taking place in South Africa and particularly in Gauteng. Public transport systems will in future become increasingly vital to keep the province moving.
