When the Gau­train was first mooted in Fe­bru­ary 2000 it was ex­pected to cost roughly R4bn. This in­creased to R7bn by 2003 and jumped to R20bn in 2005. The to­tal cost is now hov­er­ing at around R32bn. Many be­lieve this is still a bargain given the rapid urbanisation tak­ing place in South Africa and par­tic­u­larly in Gaut­eng. Pub­lic trans­port sys­tems will in fu­ture be­come in­creas­ingly vi­tal to keep the province mov­ing.
