Given huge growth of urban communities, ever-increasing fuel prices and also the new e-toll taxes on the Gauteng highways, the future of the Gautrain does seem rosy and it appears that there are plans to expand the existing route network.

This may include l inks to Soweto from Park Station, to Menlyn Park from Hatfield Station and a link to the West Rand, which would require many more tunnels.

Jensen says the GMA is currently looking at the feasibility of several extensions to the current network.

“These plans are in a very infant stage. There are, as yet, no plans to present. But the extensions mentioned are all possibilities. These possible extensions will be discussed in the 25-year Integrated Transport Master Plan for Gauteng, which is due for release during the latter part of 2013.”
