A LESSON FROM THE CEO OF FREE STATE RUGBY
NOT MANY RUGBY fans outside of Bloemfontein know this, but the CEO of Free State rugby was until recently a woman. Gerda von Solms (58) passed away unexpectedly last Friday after being admitted to hospital after complaining of abdominal pain.
Von Solms was an institution at the Free State Rugby Union, having joined the organisation in 1976 as a typist and rising to the rank of CEO in her career of more than a quarter of a century at the union. 1976 was also the year when the Free State beat Western Province in the Currie Cup final, coinciding with a period that Von Solms described as golden years for the province.
