A LES­SON FROM THE CEO OF FREE STATE RUGBY

NOT MANY RUGBY fans out­side of Bloem­fontein know this, but the CEO of Free State rugby was un­til re­cently a woman. Gerda von Solms (58) passed away un­ex­pect­edly last Fri­day af­ter be­ing ad­mit­ted to hospi­tal af­ter com­plain­ing of ab­dom­i­nal pain.

Von Solms was an in­sti­tu­tion at the Free State Rugby Union, hav­ing joined the or­gan­i­sa­tion in 1976 as a typ­ist and ris­ing to the rank of CEO in her ca­reer of more than a quar­ter of a cen­tury at the union. 1976 was also the year when the Free State beat West­ern Province in the Currie Cup fi­nal, coin­cid­ing with a pe­riod that Von Solms de­scribed as golden years for the province.
