The ANC’s provin­cial of­fice in Gaut­eng has called on its mem­bers to boy­cott cel­lu­lar net­work op­er­a­tor MTN fol­low­ing a cam­paign by the DA op­po­si­tion party that printed ad­ver­tis­ing on pre­paid air­time vouch­ers. MTN said that it had no knowl­edge of the cam­paign, which was fa­cil­i­tated by the third-party com­pany

that prints such vouch­ers. Africans away from old, green, bar­coded ID books to new, tech­nol­ogy-en­abled smart ID cards is set to be­gin in July, with a stag­gered roll-out. The Depart­ment of Home Af­fairs said it will first roll out to cabi­net min­is­ters, mem­bers of par­lia­ment and pen­sion­ers be­fore pri­ori­tis­ing first-time ID ap­pli­cants and then the broader pop­u­la­tion.
