WHAT LOBOLA IS REALLY ABOUT
The practice of lobola is something many Westerners struggle to understand. Fanie Fourie’s Lobola, a local film about an Afrikaans man who falls in love with a Zulu woman, is causing a stir all over the world. In addition to a number of local awards, the film also received the Best Film award at the Seattle Film Festival on 9 June. In modern South Africa, where cultures and races often intermarry, many a young man might relate to the plight of Fanie Fourie. In this edition of Finweek LIFE, we take a look at what lobola is, where the practice originated, how young South Africans feel about it and the legal implications in case of a dispute.
