The prac­tice of lobola is some­thing many Western­ers strug­gle to un­der­stand. Fanie Fourie’s Lobola, a lo­cal film about an Afrikaans man who falls in love with a Zulu woman, is caus­ing a stir all over the world. In ad­di­tion to a num­ber of lo­cal awards, the film also re­ceived the Best Film award at the Seat­tle Film Fes­ti­val on 9 June. In mod­ern South Africa, where cul­tures and races of­ten in­ter­marry, many a young man might re­late to the plight of Fanie Fourie. In this edi­tion of Fin­week LIFE, we take a look at what lobola is, where the prac­tice orig­i­nated, how young South Africans feel about it and the le­gal im­pli­ca­tions in case of a dis­pute.
