Mi­crosoft CEO Steve Ballmer has an­nounced that he will be step­ping down in the next 12 months. The an­nounce­ment prompted a 7% jump in Mi­crosoft’s mar­ket cap where the com­pany now lags be­hind ri­vals Google and Ap­ple in terms of value. Ballmer says that new blood is needed to lead Mi­crosoft in its trans­for­ma­tion to a “de­vices and ser­vices” com­pany. Twit­ter was ablaze with spec­u­la­tion as to who Ballmer’s suc­ces­sor will be with some sug­gest­ing that Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, a for­mer Mi­crosoft ex­ec­u­tive, should get the job. It’s any­one’s guess for now… In­ter­net ser­vice provider Afri­host launched its first mo­bile ser­vices last week with a 5GB per month 3G pack­age that is com­pet­i­tively priced at R145. The ser­vice is de­liv­ered over the MTN net­work, and the com­pany gave away a thou­sand ‘MiFi’ de­vices to the first cus­tomers who signed up for the deal.
