a good idea at the time,” says Leask. “But it’s very sandy and flat, so you find yourself wishing for a hill just so you can recover on the way down again.”
This race takes place mid-July. It starts from Wharic Park in Gaborone, Botswana, runs through the Mokolodi Game Reserve, and the Manyana Village, all the while pushing riders to their limits through thorny, sandy terrain that is interspersed with many flat sections.
The overnight camp in the bush is fully catered for. When you get to your twoman tent your bed is already made for you with pillows and fresh sheets, while the bonfires in the evenings add to the rustic atmosphere.
Remember, as with all cycling races – mountain bike and road – no helmet means no riding.
