It also varies from clinic to clinic around the coun­try, so it’s big money and re­ally only for the wealthy.”

Med­i­cal aid schemes typ­i­cally do not pro­vide cover for fer­tilit y treat­ments, with the ex­cep­tion of CAMAF med­i­cal aid scheme, which will pay ap­prox­i­mately R54 000 for one treat­ment per an­num. Be­sides get­ting a bit of a tax re­bate, you can’t claim back from the med­i­cal aid, says Fried­man. She says that she spent over R500 000 go­ing through the process her­self.
