Financial adviser Warren Ingram likes to say making the first million is always the hardest. Unfortunately, many of us non-millionaires can attest to the truth of this statement. Getting from one to a million is possible, but if you hope to achieve that goal while you’re still in charge of all your faculties, you should probably get cracking right now.

So how do you go from zero to six zero hero in five years (or less)? Jason Garner, strategic relationship manager for Old Mutual Wealth, is familiar with the question. “My clients often expect some magical answer, like there was a memo that they didn’t get,” he says. “The reality is that most of us have some idea of how to go about making the elusive million but, quite frankly, we lack the motivation to do so.”
