• A robot built out of Lego and a smartphone has broken the world record for solving a Rubik’s Cube puzzle. In an achievement that brings together two childhood icons for most readers, a duo of British engineers designed and built the Cubestormer 3 robot that set the new world record at 3.253 seconds. The robot record, that is. The human record is a considerably slower 5.5 seconds. • South African Minister of Communications Yunus Carrim has labelled Naspers* company MultiChoice a ‘monopoly’ and said that the firm and its partners have resorted to trotting out the “same old, tired issues” over digital terrestrial television. Carrim made these statements in an interview with technology news site TechCentral following a full-page Sunday newspaper advertisements in which MultiChoice accused him of advancing the “narrow commercial interests” of other industry players, in a clear reference to e.tv. MultiChoice and e.tv are at war over whether the set-top boxes that consumers will need to watch digital television when the country switches off analogue broadcasts should contain a control system. ■
