• MTN has launched a Visa-backed pay­ment card as part of its Mo­bile Money of­fer­ing, al­low­ing users to swipe for goods and pur­chases as they would with any other debit card. The card is be­ing sold at re­tail stores and is ac­ti­vated within 72 hours af­ter the ini­tial pa­per­work is pro­cessed. Mo­bile Money launched in Novem­ber 2012 and has at­tracted over 2m users since then with more than R2.5bn in trans­ac­tions.

• The City of Tsh­wane has launched 14 sci­ence labs at town­ship schools, de­signed to pro­mote in­no­va­tion and ac­cess to e-learn­ing. The mo­bile sci­ence labs are called FabLabs and are kit­ted out for cre­at­ing pro­to­types and de­vel­op­ing de­signs to get schol­ars in­ter­ested in de­vel­op­ing in­no­va­tive new prod­ucts and de­vel­op­ing their ideas into testable form. The labs were de­vel­oped by the city’s In­no­va­tion Hub.

• Ru­mours are cir­cu­lat­ing of a new, larger iPhone be­ing read­ied for launch later this year. The re­ports fol­low data from Ap­ple’s man­u­fac­tur­ing part­ners in China that sug­gest a new iPhone form fac­tor that will com­ple­ment the ex­ist­ing range and com­pete with the larger-screened An­droid de­vices from ri­vals such as Sam­sung and HTC. Ap­ple usu­ally an­nounces new iPhones around Septem­ber.
