• MTN has launched a Visa-backed payment card as part of its Mobile Money offering, allowing users to swipe for goods and purchases as they would with any other debit card. The card is being sold at retail stores and is activated within 72 hours after the initial paperwork is processed. Mobile Money launched in November 2012 and has attracted over 2m users since then with more than R2.5bn in transactions.
• The City of Tshwane has launched 14 science labs at township schools, designed to promote innovation and access to e-learning. The mobile science labs are called FabLabs and are kitted out for creating prototypes and developing designs to get scholars interested in developing innovative new products and developing their ideas into testable form. The labs were developed by the city’s Innovation Hub.
• Rumours are circulating of a new, larger iPhone being readied for launch later this year. The reports follow data from Apple’s manufacturing partners in China that suggest a new iPhone form factor that will complement the existing range and compete with the larger-screened Android devices from rivals such as Samsung and HTC. Apple usually announces new iPhones around September.
