The week that was in SA sport
1 THE SA FOOTBALL MUSEUM
IN DECEMBER LAST year, the National Lotteries Board (NLB) made
a payment totalling R4 875 630 to
The South African Football Museum.
So, R4.8m was paid out, but where is the museum six months later? “The museum is at the FNB Stadium,” says NLB manager Sershan Naidoo.
“There is no SA Football Museum at the FNB Stadium and no agreement has been entered into,” came the response from FNB stadium management.
Perhaps the South African Football Association (Safa) knows where it is?
“Safa is not aware of this museum and anyone running it is doing so without the blessing of the national association. Safa actually intends to start its own museum and that project is in the pipeline.” Finweek, however, managed to get a response from the museum’s PR company about the inconsistencies:
“The South African Football Museum has recently evolved to encompass a number of sporting codes, not just football, and these developments involve a number of stakeholders, including the National
Lotteries Board. A project of this size and scope takes a significant amount of planning, as I ’m sure you will understand, and as we are still in the initial stages we are not yet in a position to communicate the finer
details or conduct any site visits. All communication also needs to be approved by the National Lotteries Board in terms of our contractual arrangement with them.”
We just hope that they’re giving the interest on the R4.8m to a needy charity.
