The writ­ing is clearly on the wall for tra­di­tional GSM com­mu­ni­ca­tions chan­nels. IBM said that in all coun­tries sur­veyed con­sumers were flock­ing to ser­vices like What­sApp and WeChat and all but aban­don­ing the SMS and other ser­vices pro­vided di­rectly by oper­a­tors. In the ex­treme, Brazil, Mex­ico, Turkey, Greece, the Nether­lands and Spain all have OTT ser­vices as the top three chan­nels used for com­mu­ni­ca­tions.

Telecom­mu­ni­ca­tions providers aren’t al­ways fond of be­ing con­sid­ered plumbers when it comes to their role in the mar­ket, but as Vo­da­com founder Alan Knott Craig once re­marked to me, “They are plumbers . . . so they best make peace with it.”
