James Caan

Inspiring SA entrepreneurs

Finweek English Edition - - FRONT PAGE - BY LISA ILLINGWORTH

The visit to South Africa by James Caan, celebrity investor from the BBC hit reality show Dragons’ Den, seems to coincide with an increase in support for entrepreneurship as a driver for economic growth. These include a school-based initiative called Step Up 2 a Start Up that was launched by Absa, Exxaro, the Gauteng Enterprise Propeller, the MTN Foundation, Sasol and the National Youth Development Agency.

Caan is scouting for ‘ human capital’ for his new initiative under the banner of StartUpLoansSA, which will follow the same model as the British government’s funding and mentorship scheme with a similar name.

Similar enthusiasm is yet to be displayed by Government’s newly established Department of Small Business Development. The Minister of Small Business Lindiwe Zulu disappointed attendees of an event launching an entrepreneurship programme aimed at Grade 10, 11 and 12
