A NEW BRIGADE of great young SA athletes emerged at the Africa Athletic championships in Morocco.

SA finished top of the medals table with 10 gold, five silver and four bronze, highlighted by Cheyne Rahme’s record in the men’s pole vault.

The 23-year-old Rahme set a new Africa championship record of 5.41m, breaking the old record set by fellow South African, Okkert Brits back in 1993.

Commonwealth Games medallists Khotso Mokoena, Zarck Visser, Ruswahl Samaai, Cornel Fredericks , Wayde van Niekerk and Sunette Viljoen all medalled again in Morocco.

It was a SA medals clean sweep in the long jump with Visser taking gold ahead of Mokoena and Samaai.

Viljoen claimed her fourth African javelin title with a championship record of 65.32m.
