Groupon has stated that travel is its fastest- grow­ing business cat­e­gory, which i nspired the launch of a ded­i­cated mo­bile app called Get­aways.

Get­aways is a free app for iOS and An­droid which fo­cuses on travel pack­ages and ho­tels. Ac­cord­ing to the Groupon Get­aways di­vi­sion, in the year to the third quar­ter of 2014, Groupon had over $908m in gross travel billings (just un­der 13% of all of Groupon’s to­tal gross billings in that pe­riod). That rep­re­sented growth of 69% for that year.

“E-com­merce is rev­o­lu­tion­is­ing the way peo­ple ex­change goods and ser­vices, and the travel in­dus­try is no dif­fer­ent,” says Emil­ian Popa, CEO of Groupon South Africa. “As peo­ple be­come more tech-savvy, they’re be­com­ing their own travel agents, util­is­ing on­line book­ing tools and mo­bile apps to or­gan­ise their hol­i­days.”
