At least six peo­ple were killed and more than 160 ar­rested after loot­ing and vi­o­lence, tar­get­ing for­eign-owned spaza shops, broke out in Soweto last week after a shop owner shot and killed a 14-year-old boy he ac­cused of rob­bery on 19 Jan­uary. In 2008, more than 60 peo­ple were killed and 670 in­jured when xeno­pho­bic vi­o­lence erupted in town­ships across the coun­try.
