The amount of money that the South African Po­lice Ser­vice (SAPS) plans to spend on ex­ter­nal com­mu­ni­ca­tion com­pa­nies as it plans to im­prove its im­age, City Press re­ported. Two com­pa­nies have al­ready been ap­pointed – The Com­mu­ni­ca­tions Firm, whose R9.6m con­tract will see it pro­vide rep­u­ta­tion man­age­ment, me­dia mon­i­tor­ing and anal­y­sis and public re­la­tions ser­vices, and The Switch De­sign Com­pany. The lat­ter’s two-year con­tract is worth R5.4m. Ne­go­ti­a­tions for a third con­tract, worth an es­ti­mated R10m, are un­der­way. SAPS al­ready has 200 peo­ple work­ing in its com­mu­ni­ca­tions unit.
