Sibanye Gold halted operations at its Beatrix North and South shafts on 5 February after nine employees were injured in clashes between rival unions Amcu and NUM. Violence broke out after a mass meeting by Amcu, which had recently been granted minority recognition at Beatrix ahead of wage negotiations later this year. Rivalry between the two unions over membership sparked deadly strikes in the platinum belt in 2012.
Mbuyiseni Ndlozi “The importance of the 12th [February]… is to think of it as the day of accountability. We want to rescue it from the fashion parade it has become.”
