Sibanye Gold halted op­er­a­tions at its Beatrix North and South shafts on 5 Fe­bru­ary af­ter nine em­ploy­ees were in­jured in clashes be­tween ri­val unions Amcu and NUM. Vi­o­lence broke out af­ter a mass meet­ing by Amcu, which had re­cently been granted mi­nor­ity recog­ni­tion at Beatrix ahead of wage ne­go­ti­a­tions later this year. Ri­valry be­tween the two unions over membership sparked deadly strikes in the plat­inum belt in 2012.
