The an­nual eco­nomic value, worth R67.5bn, cre­ated by the Great Bar­rier Reef, which pro­vides al­most 69 000 full-time equiv­a­lent jobs. Its con­tri­bu­tion to the Aus­tralian econ­omy comes from tourism and recre­ational ac­tiv­i­ties, sci­en­tific and trop­i­cal marine ecosys­tem re­search, and com­mer­cial fish­ing. Tourism­re­lated ac­tiv­i­ties sup­port 94% of the jobs pro­vided by the reef. Di­rect ex­pen­di­ture on tourism and recre­ational ac­tiv­i­ties in the Great Bar­rier Reef is more than $6.9bn (R80.2bn), which rep­re­sents 7% of the to­tal tourism ex­pen­di­ture in Australia. The Great Bar­rier Reef re­ceives around 2m do­mes­tic and in­ter­na­tional vis­i­tors ev­ery year.
