The estimated volume in cubic metres of dredged material that could be dumped into World Heritage waters. There is currently no ban on the dumping of dredge spoil (the excess material that results from dredging) in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Site. The Australian government is currently considering a ban on the dumping of dredge spoil in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. However, the park is slightly smaller than the World Heritage Site, and does not include most of the islands and waters around the ports. It is in these locations that 80% of dumping has occurred since 2010.
